✨✨Get selected with these 8 Interview Tips ✨✨
Given and taken plenty interviews myself, I am sharing some valuable tips.
Foremost, I assume that you have done your preparation and brushed up interview topics and general interview questions like tell me about yourself, why do you want to join us, your current tech stack questions etc. Technical skills are important. Below are the points that will highlight you above those candidates who answered all technical questions but lack softskills.
In my opinion, communication is utmost important when you are in a professional environment. You have to state what you think even if it is wrong but with politeness. With right communication skills, you can learn your job duties but without them it becomes difficult for your seniors or colleagues to communicate with you or teach them to you.
So below are tips to highlight to the interviewer that you are a good communicator and you can achieve anything with your communication.
1. DRESS FORMAL :
Iron your clothes and dress formal.
Reason : Gives an impression that you are serious for the interview.
2. KEEP YOUR POSTURE STRAIGHT AND UPRIGHT :
Keep the laptop on a table (not in your lap or bed), you should sit in a chair directly facing the camera.
Reason : Gives an impression that you are giving full attention to the interviewer. And you do your professional dealings like this.
3. SMILE :
Keep a polite smile on your face. A professional smile. Don’t be poker face during the interview.
Reason : Gives an impression that you are friendly to work with.
4. HAVE UNINTERRUPTED INTERNET AND LAPTOP BATTERY :
If you are facing power issues or connectivity issues make sure you have backups and if it not possible ask the HR to reschedule stating the same reason.
Reason : Interviewer will have less time to know you due to these issues, better is to have it rescheduled instead of sabotaging their and your time.
5. HAVE YOUR TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF TAILORED AS PER JOB DESCRIPTION AND THE COMPANY :
After telling about your recent experience and background, sneakily add details which pertains to the job description of the job you are applying for. Describe your interests aligning to the job description. The more the better.
Reason: Gives an impression that you are the perfect candidate for the job.
6. ALWAYS LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEWER FIRST AND ALWAYS ASK IF SOMETHING IS NOT CLEAR TO YOU :
Be an active listener and don’t be afraid to ask questions during the interview, the interviewer wants to hire you and will try to understand you and make you understand as much as possible. Be an active communicator.
Reason : Gives an impression that you discuss professional problems like this in your current role. You ask questions and you don’t settle till something is not clear to you.
7. IF YOU DON’T KNOW SOMETHING, MAKE YOUR BEST GUESS AND THEN SAY “BUT I AM NOT SURE IF THIS IS CORRECT OR NOT, I WILL SURELY HAVE A LOOK AT THIS AFTER THE INTERVIEW”:
There will be always questions for which you will have no answer or wrong answer or partially correct answer. Instead of completely giving up on the question or being overconfident about your wrong answer, you must always try to indicate that you have your current knowledge and can be wrong with what you know and you are a work in progress and trying to learn more. Be honest here.
Reason : Gives an impression that you will try your best for a situation that you know nothing about. You are open to learn and you are good at admitting things.
8. ASK FOR FEEDBACK AND ATLEAST ONE ADDITIONAL QUESTION AFTER THE INTERVIEW :
If interviewer says “Do you have a question for us?”
First thank them and ask feedback :“Thank you very much for your time and taking my interview. It was very nice talking to you. I know that I did not answer everything and messed up in some questions, it would be helpful if you could give me some feedback, I will surely work on my weak points.”
Reason : First, it gives you a clue whether you are selected or not 😛. Second, it gives an impression that you are always looking out to improve yourself even when you have aced the interview or failed the interview and you are extremely humble. You know that taking feedback will improve you immensely. Feedback will also help you improve for the next interview, you can always practice more. This one is a cherry on top.
Here are some additional questions you can ask :
1. If I get selected, how will a normal day in the role will look like?
2. Can you tell me about your current roles and responsibilities? What were the first few difficulties you faced in your role?
3. What should be the technologies that I should learn in order to master the role I have applied for?
4. How can my role evolve in 3 to 5 years?
Reason : These questions indicate that you want to work in the company and considering it for long term.
All the best for your interview! 🎉😊
